Three Tips To Help You Prepare Your Car To Be Shipped

Whether you’re shipping your car with a professional vehicle transport service because you’re going through a big move, or whether you’re shipping a car to someone else across the country (or maybe even in a different country), there are a few preparation tips to keep in mind when you’re getting everything ready. One of them is to speak with a car insurance agent to ensure that your vehicle is protected with full coverage car insurance in case it gets damaged or stolen during the transport. You may also contact multiple car insurance companies to compare their products and find a policy that suits your needs.

  1. Make sure to clean the inside and the outside of your car. This is definitely important if you’re using a vehicle transport service that involves another person driving your car for a long period, and it’s also important if you’re shipping a used car to another person. In any situation, though, it’s important to remember to remove expensive electronics from the interior of your car so that no one is tempted to steal anything. If you have fancy features on the exterior of your car (like a tall antenna or a spoiler), it’s best to remove these items before sending your car off with a car shipping service, so that nothing gets damaged during the moving process.
  2. After making sure that the exterior of your car is cleaned off, it’s a good idea to take some pictures of your car — especially if you’re using an auto shipping service that doesn’t provide a detailed pre-shipping inspection, or if you have to ship a car to another person. The idea here is that you want to document any pre-existing scratches, dents, paint chips, etc. — or lack thereof — so that if any damage does occur during shipment, you can prove that the driver or shipping company is liable for the damages.
  3. And finally, if you’re sending your car to another person, make sure that they have all the information and paperwork necessary: the car’s registration (such as the dmv registration renewal documents), license plates and keys; the contact info of the vehicle shipping company and your own contact info; and copies of insurance forms and inspection forms. Many car shipping companies will also provide an official statement upon delivering the car, so it’s important that the person on the receiving end is able to get this information and let you know that everything went smoothly.

Shipping a car — especially to someone else — can seem like a pretty daunting process, but as long as you make sure that you stay organized, there’s no reason for it not to go smoothly!
